Closing In On Christmas

We went shopping on Sunday to stock the freezer with more meat. While it wasn’t that much of a shock to see Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling – it is November after all – my jaw dropped when I saw a sign counting down the number of days until Santa arrives. 40 DAYS! That’s less than six weeks.

My fears that the year is coming to a close were confirmed this morning when I noticed that next week is the last for November. That and the endless number of invites to end of year parties.

OK, time to note the science news that didn’t make the website.

1 – Happy 10th birthday ISS. The international space station was joined by the space shuttle Endeavour who brought along extra beds, a new toilet and water recycling system. A pair of space walkers joined in the revelry by throwing away a tool kit they needed. Doh!

2 – Einstein was correct with e=mc2. Only took 103 years to confirm. Now we know that everything around us is made up of 5% mass and 95% energy. So why can’t we move through walls? Must be those pesky gluons holding everything together.

3 – Final story related to IVF. I chickened out on this one as I didn’t want any hate mail. Researchers in the US have found IVF babies are up to four times more likely to have birth defects. My feeling is that as this technology becomes more widely used we may see more trends such as this. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Ikea Madness

Sunday afternoon at the busiest Ikea in Australia. Why not?

We headed out to Rhodes with Zac in tow. Why is it that he gets upset in the car eveytime we head out there? Nay thinks he takes after his father.

We arrived at the store knowing what we wanted. The challenge was negotiating through the crowds with a pram. Once at the area where the desks were located it was a matter of deciding exactly what we wanted – yes we changed our mind a few times.

After chatting with the sales assistant, who nearly talked us into spending an extra $120, we bee-lined to the warehouse. By now Zac was awake and angry again. I gathered the goods while Nay feed the lil’ man. Next stop the queues – to pay, to collect, to organise delivery.

Two hours later, $700 lighter and a pair of headaches combined, we headed home. To top it off, Zac filled his pants with … you know what, and the air in the car soon turned racid.

Can’t wait to do that agan … NOT!
